4-H Contests / Activities

4-H is a youth development program of the University of Tennessee and Tennessee State University. 4-H develops youth to thrive and to “make the best better.” Youth participate in 4-H through clubs, special interest groups, after-school programs, camps, and many other methods. 4-H youth “learn by doing” through hands-on activities, starting in their own communities, and reaching far beyond; while empowering them to develop and strengthen valuable life skills.

4-H Project- Demonstration (4th and 5th grade ONLY)
GOAL: To practice combining verbal & visual skills to communicate a message.
Share what you’ve learned with others. Give a demonstration teaching one simple project idea. What
is a demonstration though? It is a talk that shows, one step at a time, how to do something while
telling how to do it. It is easier than giving a speech because you have visual aids (posters, models,
props) while you are talking.

Chick Chain

Chick Chain is a unique way for students to raise their own flock at home and learn about poultry in a hands-on experience. Chick Chain teaches responsibility, financial management, record keeping, communication, and marketing all while allowing participants to enjoy their project and reap the rewards of their hard work. Participants will be responsible for raising chickens to adulthood.

The 4-H Chick Chain project provides youth the opportunity for hands on experience in the areas of poultry management, health, nutrition, as well as developing business and record keeping skills. Generally, youth who participate in the 4-H Chick Chain project will receive 1-2 day old pullets (female chicks). They will feed and care for these pullets for approximately 20 weeks.
